If you were caught taking sports cards, Pokémon cards, Magic cards, or hobby boxes from a store like Target, Walmart, or Meijer, you’re probably asking yourself, “What was I thinking?” You’re not alone. I work with people every week who never imagined they would be in this position—good people, professionals, parents, and students. This moment feels heavy, but it does not define you.
In Michigan, shoplifting is called retail fraud. Depending on the value of the cards, you may be charged with Retail Fraud in the third degree, second degree, or in some cases even a felony. Even a misdemeanor can mean a criminal record, court involvement, fines, and potential probation. This is real, but it is manageable with the right approach. Trading cards have become high-value items that are small, easy to conceal, and easy to rationalize. Many people tell me things like, “It’s a big corporation—they won’t notice,” or “I was just grabbing something small,” or even “I planned to pay next time.” That type of thinking is common, but it can lead to serious consequences. What I consistently see is a disconnect between the person and the moment. Many clients could afford the cards. Some were trying to get something for their kids. Others were stressed, distracted, or simply made a split-second decision they can’t fully explain. That matters, because your case is not just about what happened in the store—it’s about who you are beyond that moment. The process typically involves being stopped or cited, receiving a court date, and appearing in district court. What you do next is far more important than what already happened. This is not the time to panic or assume the worst, but it’s also not something to treat casually. If you slow down, understand the charge, and begin building a plan, you put yourself in a completely different position. I have helped many people in this exact situation move forward, protect their record, and use this as a turning point rather than a defining moment. You are not the first good person to make this mistake, and you won’t be the last. There is a path forward. Comments are closed.
