What happens when I am arrested for domestic violence in Novi Michigan?

2/8/2023

DV Attorney 52-1 Novi Michigan

When someone is arrested for domestic violence in Novi, Michigan and the case is heard in the 52-1 District Court, the following steps typically occur:
  1. Arraignment: The defendant will appear in court for their arraignment, where they will be informed of the charges against them and asked to enter a plea. If the defendant pleads guilty, they will be sentenced at this time. If they plead not guilty, the case will move forward to the next phase.
  2. Pretrial Conference: If the defendant pleads not guilty, they will attend a pretrial conference where both the prosecution and defense will discuss the case and try to reach a plea agreement. If a plea agreement is not reached, the case will proceed to trial.
  3. Trial: If the case goes to trial, both sides will present evidence and witnesses in front of a judge or jury. The judge or jury will then make a decision on the defendant's guilt or innocence.
  4. Sentencing: If the defendant is found guilty, they will be sentenced by the judge. The sentence could include jail time, probation, fines, and/or mandatory counseling or treatment programs.
It's important to note that the specifics of each case will vary, and this is just a general overview of the process. If you have been arrested for domestic violence, it's crucial to seek legal representation as soon as possible.
